Professor Dr. Maszlee bin Malik holds a Ph.D. in Good Governance from Durham University and is a respected professor with roles at both the University of Cyberjaya and Hankook University in Korea. His expertise spans Islamic studies, governance, and political science, and he has served in numerous prominent capacities, including Chair of the Malaysian Parliament Select Committee on Education and Deputy Chairman of the Selangor Public Library.
Throughout his career, Dr. Maszlee has been dedicated to creating equitable educational opportunities. During his tenure as Minister of Education, he spearheaded reforms such as the Zero Reject Policy, ensuring educational access for all children, including stateless ones, and advancing digital learning through the adoption of Google Classroom across Malaysia—an approach that proved to be an effective strategy during the COVID-19 pandemic. His work has been instrumental in improving education quality and accessibility nationwide.
With his extensive background and dedication to impactful governance, Dr. Maszlee is an invaluable addition to the UBB Amanah Berhad Board, guiding the organization’s commitment to integrity and positive social impact.
Dato’ Murelidaran M Navaratnam graduated from the University of London in 1988 with LLB (Honours) degree. He is a member of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, London and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1989.
He was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 1990. He started his legal career as a lawyer with Messrs. Pregraves and Matthews in 1990, and later Messrs. Ghazi & Lim. He started his own legal firm in 2003 and has been running his own firm since. Dato’ Murelidaran M Navaratnam has been in legal practice in excess of two decades in total. During this time, he has served as a member of the Bar Council, Malaysia and Chairman of the Penang Bar Council from 2008 to 2011.
In 1998, Dato’ George established Messrs George Varughese & Co (later rebranded as Messrs George Varughese in 2009). He had, in 1998, also obtained his Masters in Law (LLM) from the University of Malaya, and later became a Member of the Malaysian Institute of Arbitrators, a certified Sports Arbitrator (C.I.Arb), an accredited Construction Industry Adjudicator with the Asian International Arbitration Centre and a certified Mediator (C.I.Arb).
Years of dedication to the profession and to the Bar Council saw Dato’ George rise to helm the Malaysian Bar as President from 2017 until 2019.
In November 2019, Dato’ George was appointed as a Judicial Commissioner of the High Court of Malaya, in which office he served at the High Court of Malaya in Penang until 2021.
Thereafter, in 2022, Dato’ George returned to practice as a Consultant with Messrs George Varughese, where his vision continues to lend veracity and professionalism to the work of the firm’s most experienced and budding practitioners alike.
Aida Othman graduated with an LLB (Hons) from the University of Kent, UK, and was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 1999.
She has had extensive experience in the banking and financial sectors having worked at MBF Finance Berhad, AMBank Berhad, and Public Bank Berhad, specialising in regulatory issues, corporate law, guarantees and contract law. She is also very familiar with Bank Negara Malaysia’s regulatory requirements and framework.
Aida oversees the company’s general portfolio. As the CEO, she has led a number of initiatives that has continually strengthened our portfolio and she has contributed significantly to UBB Amanah Berhad’s stability and growth. She has also greatly enhanced the company’s expertise in having effective risk management and providing diversified trust services.
